Initial Consult & Treatment

The initial consultation is for first time patients. This session allows us the time to do an in-depth health consultation and formulate a treatment plan that caters to your individual needs. I may offer treatments such as acupuncture, moxibustion, guasha, acupressure massage, or fire cupping.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years and is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The very fine needles used during treatments are sterile one time used monofilament (Not hollow). The locations chosen to insert these needles are uniquely tailored to the individual. Our body has 361 acupoints along several pathways that are called meridians. These pathways are used to balance our bodies by removing blockages that are causing disease or pain and restore the desired flow of energy so our bodies can heal.
If you’re a visual person this next part might clear a few things. Imagine a river that is clogged up due to a dam of debris, by removing the dam we allow the river to begin flowing smoothly again. Acupuncture works by removing debris. Debris can be built-up emotions, muscle spasms or nerve irritation.
What can acupuncture help with?
-Acid reflux, HeartBurn, Constipation, Headaches, Neck and shoulder pain, Back pain, Sciatica, Menstrual pain, TMJ, PTSD,. Insomnia, Anxiety, Nausea, PCOS, Tinnitus, Stress and many more

Guasha

Guasha is a traditional Chinese healing technique that involves scraping the skin with a smooth tool. The therapist applies a special oil or lotion to the skin and scrapes it in a specific pattern, usually along the meridians of the body. This technique causes tiny blood vessels near the surface of the skin to rupture, which stimulates the immune system and increases blood flow to the area. Guasha is commonly used to relieve pain and stiffness in the muscles and joints, and can also improve circulation, boost the immune system, and promote relaxation. Tension release will be felt immediately after treatment.

Fire Cupping

Fire cupping is a traditional technique that is widely used to improve overall well-being. It involves placing heated cups on the skin, creating a gentle suction that can help stimulate blood and energy flow. The cups are heated using a flame, which removes oxygen and creates a warm, soothing sensation. While the resulting circular marks may look like bruises, they are simply the natural result of the suction process and are not painful. With its ability to promote healing and relaxation, fire cupping is an effective and popular treatment for many people seeking a more holistic approach to their health.

Acupressure Massage

Acupressure massage is a wonderful way to support your body’s natural healing processes! By gently applying pressure to specific points on the body, this form of therapeutic massage can help release tension, improve circulation, and promote relaxation. Based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, acupressure massage recognizes that our bodies have a beautiful and intricate network of channels, or “meridians,” through which energy flows. When this energy is blocked or imbalanced, it can manifest as physical or emotional symptoms. But by stimulating the right points on these meridians, acupressure massage can help restore balance and harmony to your whole being.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is acupuncture painful?

One of the most common misconception about acupuncture is that it must be painful because it involves needles. However, acupuncture is usually painless since the needles used are as thin as a hair. First time patients often express their surprise at how different the experience is from what they had envisioned.

Before the first treatment, I take a moment to inform patients that they may experience a sensation called the “de qi” sensation. This refers to the arrival of energy to the acupuncture point. This sensation is often described as feeling of numbness, tingling, distension, heaviness, warmth, or a radiating feeling. These sensations are desirable as they indicate that the treatment is having the intended effect on the body. These sensations typically dissipate within a few seconds, leaving the patient in a calm state. In fact, many patients find acupuncture so relaxing that they fall asleep during treatment. Despite the common fear of needles, most people find acupuncture to be a comfortable, soothing, and even enjoyable experience.

Before treatment, I like to tell patients to have something light to eat, so they are neither too full or too hungry. Having acupuncture on an empty stomach could make you feel lightheaded or fatigued after, so it’s best to eat within a few hours before your treatment.

Acupuncture is covered to a certain amount by most extended health care plans in NB. I encourage patients to check with their insurance providers to determine what their coverage is. To make things easier for our patients, we offer direct billing to most extended health care plans from our clinic (please ask us about your insurance provider). All you need to do is bring your extended health care card or information with you to your first treatment, and we will directly bill the insurance company for the treatment, or the portion of the treatment which is covered.
